How to Use Feng Shui to Position Your Desk
Optimize your desk position for feng shui
In Feng Shui, different parts of your home represent different areas of your life. Your desk and workspace (inside and outside the home) symbolize your career, so you should pay attention to this area to ensure you are supported in your work life.
An important aspect to consider is the layout and placement of your desk. In Feng Shui, the direction and position of the desk is extremely important to bring positive energy and attract money into the office and home workspace, be it a private room, bedroom or other common areas of your home. Here are some favorite tips for optimizing your desk layout from a feng shui perspective.
Instructions
01 Plan Out a Dedicated Space
When it comes to your desk layout, one of the most important things is to have a fixed, dedicated area to work. This means not using the corner of the dining table as an office during the day and then putting work papers aside when it’s time for dinner. If you want a stable and rewarding career, it’s important to have a dedicated space where you can truly focus on your work.
If you work from home and have a separate room that can be used as an office, this is ideal. If you need to place a desk in a shared room intended for another purpose, such as a bedroom, try to create a visual separation between the different areas.
Draw your plan on graph paper, using a tape measure to determine what the room’s layout might look like. Make sure there is enough space around the table to move around comfortably, and arrange work materials around the table to prevent them from getting dirty.
02 Set Up a Commanding Position
One of the most important feng shui principles to consider when choosing a table location is commanding position. This means that your desk is positioned so that you can see the door when you sit at the desk, but you are not in line with the door. This position gives you a clearer view of opportunities and ideas. It can also subconsciously help you feel less stressed and more relaxed because you can see anyone or anything that may be coming.
If you can’t get your desk in a commanding position, there are a few ways to adjust it. If you need to turn away from the door, place a mirror so you can see the reflection of the door while sitting at your desk. If you need to place the table in line with the door, you should hang a feng shui crystal ball between you and the door to help dissipate the incoming energy.
03 Place the Desk at an Angle
If you want to bring challenge, risk and movement to your career, try placing your desk at an angle rather than parallel to the wall. This is a very dynamic position that can facilitate growth and change. But remember, this can lead to many ups and downs.
04 Consider the View
Another thing to keep in mind when setting up your desk is to consider what you’re looking at when you sit down to work. Ideally, you want to look at what inspires you. It’s best not to look directly at a blank wall, as it can symbolize blocks and make it difficult to advance in your career. If you need to position your desk against a wall, you can widen the view with a mirror on the opposite wall or an expansive piece of art.
Placing a table right next to a window is also not ideal. While this may seem like an interesting way to work, it’s best to place a window close to you so that your energy and focus stays on your work and not in the window.
05 Avoid Certain Positions
A fairly common desk position, but not the best from a feng shui perspective, is an L-shaped desk where you face the corner of the room. Because your back is to the door, you have no control, which can lead to a lack of control, support, and creativity in your work. You’re also looking directly at the wall, which can limit height.
If your office is set up this way, you can place a mirror on the wall behind your desk to expand your vision and overcome loss of control. But it is best to move the table to a place with more optimal feng shui.
