08 Closet Door Alternatives

The closet is the most important storage space in the bedroom. This is where you store your clothes and shoes, so it should be both attractive and functional. In fact, the easiest way to update a cabinet is to simply replace the cabinet doors. There are many different types of wardrobe doors to choose from – far beyond the simple swing door.

Below we’ve rounded up some of the most interesting cabinet door options to consider. Whether you’re looking for something more modern and practical or prefer a more casual, retro look, these cabinet door options are sure to add a touch of uniqueness to your space.

01 French Doors

“French doors are my favorite alternative to traditional cabinet doors,” says Andre Kazimierski, CEO of Improovy. “Typically, French doors have glass panels along their entire length and open easily from the wall. They are ideal for creating a feeling of lightness and spaciousness in a room and are especially notable because they come in pairs.”

If you’re unsure about glass revealing a cluttered closet, Kazimierski suggests you consider adding curtains or frosted glass to your doors, which will still give the same airy feel without being completely see-through.

02 Wooden Doors

If you want something unique and aesthetically pleasing, a wooden door may be a suitable walk-in closet alternative for you. “I recommend installing a wood door to add texture to your bedroom,” says Robert Johnson, founder of Sawinery. “There are many designs to choose from in different colors. As a carpenter who has worked on many similar projects, I can assure you that it will suit any existing style of your bedroom.”

03 No Door At All

Over the last decade or so, appliance and decorative goods manufacturers have truly turned storage into an art—to the point that cabinet doors may not even be necessary for families who love to declutter and organize. “We’re no longer limited to wicker baskets and wire hangers,” said Allison Smith, founder of Allison Smith Design. “We have a variety of storage and organization options in a variety of styles, materials and finishes. Finding ways to place and arrange our furniture to suit the design style of the room is easy.”

04 Pocket Doors

“Pocket doors are a great space-saving option for your closet because the door slides along the wall rather than swinging open into your closet space,” says Priscilla Moiseoff, lead stylist at Walker Edison Interiors. “It will also help you avoid having to lock yourself in a closet to use it.”

05 Curtains

“A more versatile alternative to closet doors is hanging curtains,” says Moiseoff. “They are easy to install, fairly inexpensive and can be easily customized to suit your space.”

06 Folding Doors

Folding closet doors are another great option for your wardrobe. “Folding closet doors offer a little more space than other closet doors because they fold down when not in use; and they will fit any size doorway,” says Houghton. “They are very popular in basements because they are not a permanent fixture, so you can easily remove them when they are no longer needed or if you have unexpected plumbing problems.”

07 Macrame

Over the past few years, macramé has become more popular due to the ease and boho feel it creates. You can easily find handmade macrame curtains on craft sites like Etsy, making them a great choice for irregularly shaped door frames.

08 Mirrored doors

Whether you have a large walk-in closet or something more modest, a few mirrors can greatly improve the overall functionality of your closet. Mirrored doors are the easiest and most practical way to add mirrors to a space.
