HGTV’s Egypt Sherrod Spills Her 4 Best Tips to Find the Perfect Home Fragrance
Home scents have the power to transform any space into a vibrant tropical oasis or peaceful abode, so finding the perfect scent that suits your lifestyle and design aesthetic is important.
Luckily, HGTV personality and interior designer Egypt Sherrod is here to help you get started. She partnered with Air Wick and 1-800-Flowers.com to create the latest collection of home fragrances to help others find long-lasting scents that personalize their space.
“Develop a sense of home based on your authentic personality,” Sherrod told The Spruce.
The collection offers a selection of exclusive bouquets inspired by Air Wick’s signature home scents, paired with complimentary Air Wick fragrance oils, plus essential or plug-in diffusers and enhanced-print diffusers. You won’t have to say goodbye to the beautiful floral notes in your home even after your bouquet has withered.
We talked to Sherrod about her best tips for finding the perfect scent for your home and how to use it effectively in your home so you can create scents you love walking in every day.
Find What’s Right for You
When it comes to home scents, Sherrod stresses the importance of finding a scent that makes you feel comfortable and happy as soon as you walk into your home. Whether it’s lavender for a calming mood or linen for a feeling of freshness, find notes that will create the ambiance you look forward to coming home after a long day.
Since everyone has different personal preferences, there are no hard and fast rules about what is right and wrong, so explore your options until you find one that works for me.
Go to a Flower Shop
If you’re not sure where or how to find your perfect signature scent at home, Sherrod recommends visiting your local florist to find out what scents you like best.
“Go to the store, buy different strains, smell them and create combinations that make you feel really good,” Sherrod says.
Another option Sherrod recommends is to visit 1-800-Flowers.com to browse a variety of ready-made bouquets for inspiration, or create your own bouquet from flowers you love in store. It will be delivered straight to your home so you can smell it before purchasing the perfume.
Create an Experience
Choosing a perfume for your home should always be a purposeful process in which you can evoke certain emotions or create a memorable experience for yourself or others.
As a real estate broker and interior designer, Sherrod always asks her agents to bake cookies or brew a cinnamon-orange mixture before an open house to create a cozy, warm atmosphere for guests.
“When someone tours a home, they’re not just looking with their eyes, but with all their senses,” Sherrod says. “The sense of smell really enhances the experience.”
This also applies to specific rooms in your home, such as the home office or laundry room. If you want to create a vibrant space, choose a lemongrass or mint scent for your home office to feel energized.
Choose Designated Areas
Depending on the size of your space, where you place your diffuser or outlet can enhance its note in the home or create an impact when guests arrive.
Personally, Sherrod likes to use the electrical outlet outside her front door, so it’s the first thing you notice as soon as you walk into her home. It was barely noticeable and made a pleasant impression on everyone, including herself.
Avoid placing plugs near curtains or large pieces of furniture, as this can block the air flow through which the odor travels. Aim for open areas where it can blend in easily.
If you’re using a diffuser, place it in the center of the coffee table along with other accessories like books or decorative accents to tie the look together.
