Is a Bedroom With a Desk Bad Feng Shui?
More than ever, many of us are creating jobs in our homes. While working from the comfort of your own home certainly has its benefits, this situation also poses some feng shui challenges. Finding the best home office location may require some planning and flexibility, especially if you live in a small space.
If you work from home occasionally or regularly, it’s best to designate a space in your home designated for work. This helps you concentrate, which means you can stay alert and productive while working. Your workspace should be a space that you have created for yourself with a specific purpose. This could be an entire room or just a table that you have designated as your home workspace.
Having a Desk in the Bedroom
You should pay attention to the position of your desk because it symbolizes your work and career. In general, the bedroom is not the most ideal place for a workspace because it can be difficult to concentrate when you know your bed is next to you. The bedroom should be a relaxing, rejuvenating space, and placing a desk here can shift the energy from quiet to intense. This means that moving work into the bedroom is not ideal for sleep or romantic relationships.
However, sometimes placing a desk here is necessary if space is limited or you live with roommates. If your desk is currently in your bedroom and you can’t move it anywhere else, don’t panic. Feng Shui gives us the tools to transform the energies in our space so they can better support us, and there are always ways to make the most of our current circumstances.
Working With What You Have
The goal of feng shui is not to judge what happens in your home as good or bad. Instead, we encourage you to be curious about what you notice in your home and work with what you have. Instead of fearing that your bedroom desk will create “bad” energy, you can use feng shui to balance the energy in your bedroom and better support you.
If you need to place a desk in the bedroom, try to create two separate zones in the room: a work area and a relaxation area. Your work area is where your desk is and where you keep your computer and all your work materials. Your relaxation area will be a desk, which should ideally be intended for sleeping, reading and intimacy.
Where to Place Your Desk
If possible, try to position your desk in a commanding position. When you are told to sit at your desk, you should be able to see the door or entrance to your bedroom while sitting in your chair at your desk. This will allow you to feel in control of your work, productivity and career.
Depending on the size and layout of your bedroom, placing a desk in a comfortable position may not always be possible. In this case, you can use a small mirror to reflect the door behind you. Place a mirror on your computer screen or on the wall you are facing and make sure it is positioned so that you can see the door’s reflection in the mirror.
Balance Yin and Yang
In Feng Shui we look at different types of chi or energy. You may be familiar with the concept of yin and yang, which describes two opposing energies that are always present and always moving in relation to each other. Yin is softer, darker and more passive, while Yang is brighter, faster and more active. Work requires more positive energy, and to improve sleep and relaxation we need more negative energy. If you have a workspace in your bedroom, it’s important to create a balance between Yin and Yang so you can relax and unwind when you’re not working.
To move energy towards Yin, you can use light. First, turn off the lights at the end of the day or use circadian light to signal your body that it’s time to relax. You should also turn off your computer (or better yet, unplug it) when you’re done with work for the day. You can also use blackout curtains or curtains to keep your room as dark as possible while you sleep.
Get Grounded With the Earth Element
Another way to change the energy in our space is to work with the five elements. Each element is associated with different types of energies and qualities that we may want to enhance or cultivate in our lives. Earth is one of the five elements, and earth is very nurturing and supportive. Adding more earth to your bedroom will help balance out the distracting energy of work that your desk represents and help you feel more grounded and stable.
You can add earth by adding yellow to your bedroom decor because yellow symbolizes the earth element. You can also place an earthly object on the table, such as a crystal, stone, or piece of ceramic.
